Russia: Lavrov slams UK FM's proposal tightening Kremlin sanctions

Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Lavrov heavily criticised British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt's suggestion that EU partners should tighten sanctions against Russia in response to the Skripal chemical attack. Lavrov made the comments during a press conference with Foreign Minister of Serbia Ivica Dacic in Sochi on Tuesday.

"The country that leaves the European Union within Brexit, seeks to dictate foreign policy to the European Union. And now, as it turns out, London wants to dictate foreign policy regarding Russia in Washington as well," Lavrov said.

"When the [British] minister was asked if there was any progress in identifying the suspects, he did not know what to answer his own reporters," he added, referring to the nerve agent attack in Salisbury.

Lavrov also said that "there is no 'more likely' to be any more about the issue of the Salisbury incident investigation, or on any other issue that the British side is trying to interpret in an anti-Russian vein."

According to Lavrov, "everyone understands that sanctions against Russia have been imposed not because of Syria, not because of Ukraine, not because of Crimea, not because of anything else, but because of the desire to use methods of dishonest competition, promote an absolutely unpromising policy of restraining the Russian Federation."

"It's sad that certain political circles in the United States have turned relations with Russia into a card to play in the internal political struggle in the States," the Russian minister added.

The Foreign Minister of Serbia said that "the relations between the Russian Federation and Serbia are at a very high level, and they can be described as relations of strategic partnership."

Dacic added that Serbia has "not joined and will not join the unilateral sanctions that were imposed against Russia."
