Poland: Nord Stream 2 disagreement overshadows German-Polish FMs' meeting
Poland and Germany voiced conflicting opinions on the Nord Stream 2 pipeline as German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas met with his Polish counterpart Jacek Czaputowicz in Harmeze on Monday, after visiting the former Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau.
Where the German Minister made a pacifying move in claiming that his country takes responsibility "for the atrocities and horrors that were committed on Jews and Poles", Czaputowicz stated that there remained unequal treatment towards the Poles who had suffered in and since WW II.
"There is a sense of unfair treatment of Poland, if we compare Poland's losses incurred during World War II, as well as what Poland obtained as reparations, as it was in relation to other countries. We see here a striking disproportion. I think that this topic need to be talked about", said Czaputowicz.
Touching upon the Nord Stream 2 pipeline project, the head of Polish diplomacy claimed that this project will help Russia "modernise" it's "army", adding that Poland stands together with the US.
The German representative however repeatedly stated that he sees the project as primarily "economic".
