SOT, Luciano Goccia, Survivor of Genoa bridge collapse (Italian): "It's miraculous [that I'm alive], that's all."

A survivor of the Genoa Morandi bridge disaster told journalists on Thursday that it was a miracle he was alive, two days after at least 38 were killed in the bridge's collapse.

Luciano Goccia was exiting his truck beneath the Morandi bridge when the structure collapsed during a storm at around 11:30 (09:30 GMT) on Tuesday.

He was thrown several metres by a shockwave, while his truck was completely wrecked. "I found myself flying, banging against a wall and I lost my breath," Goccia recounted when he arrived to retrieve what remained of his truck.

Goccia suffered a dislocated shoulder and a blow to the hip, but no fractures. "I'm touched by a miracle, that's all," he said. Goccia told reporters he used to pass across the bridge for work up to three times a day, adding that he could not yet bring himself to look at the destroyed structure.

When asked if he managed to sleep the previous night, Goccia answered that thoughts of the vicitms had kept him awake.

Officials say it is unlikely any more survivors will be found under the rubble of the collpased bridge.

The cause of the bridge collapse is still being investigated. Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has declared a 12 month state of emergency in the region, and pledged €5 million ($5.70 million) of government funds for the area.
