Turkey: Erdogan announces boycott on iPhones and other US products

Turkey, Ankara
August 14, 2018 at 13:59 GMT -00:00 · Published

Turkey will enforce boycott American-made electronic products, said the country’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara on Tuesday

"There is an economic attack against Turkey. Earlier such things were done in secret and now they are open to us. We can react in two ways: economically and politically," said Erdogan.

"Our Ministry of Finance and the Treasury are working day and night. We will boycott electronic goods from the United States. They have iPhones, but on the other hand there are Samsungs. We have our local brand Venus Vestel, we will use it," he added.

The statement comes amid the ongoing diplomatic row between Ankara and Washington over the arrest of Pastor Andrew Brunson.

A financial shockwave shook Turkey on Friday, when its currency tumbled more than 16 percent due to the diplomatic rift between two countries.

On the same day, US President Donald Trump announced the doubling of tariffs on steel and aluminium imports from Turkey, in protest over the detention of Brunson.

The pastor was arrested two years ago over alleged links to the outlawed Kurdish PKK party and to the Fetullah Gulen movement, which Turkey claims was behind the 2016 attempted coup.
