Spain: Assange solution must be reached through dialogue - Moreno in Madrid

Ecuadorian President Lenin Moreno spoke to reporters about the fate of Wikileaks Julian Assange at the Europa Press Forum in Madrid, Friday.

Asked by reporters whether Assange must leave the Ecuadorian embassy in London "sooner or later" Moreno replied "As a matter of fact, yes. But this solution must be achieved through dialogue."

"I have never agreed with Mr. Assange's activity. I have never agreed with tapping people's private e-mails to obtain information. It does not matter how valuable this information might be to bring light to undesirable events committed by governments or people. This is not the way," continued Moreno.

"The only thing we want is the assurance that his life will not be in danger," said the Ecuadorian President, adding that "we are managing this with Mr. Assange's legal counsellors and we are managing this with the British Government."

Rumours have been growing that Ecuadorian President Lenin Moreno and UK officials have come to an agreement under which Ecuador will withdraw its asylum protection for Julian Assange.

The WikiLeaks founder, who is holed up in the embassy, would then be handed over to British authorities.
