Iraq: Kidnappings, killings on the rise despite declared victory over ISIS

Iraqi government security advisor Hisham al-Hashimi said kidnappings and killings by the Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL) militants in Iraq have increased, despite the Western coalition declaring victory over the group in the country last year. He was talking in an interview for RT in Baghdad on Wednesday.

"In June these extremist groups burst their activity. Eighty-three people, whether civilians or Iraqi servicemen, were kidnapped or killed in these areas. In April-May there were only 30 or 35 such cases," he said.

Al-Hashimi stated the state media is staying silent over the issue "in order not to spread panic and not to prevent the government from completing the operation to restore stability."

According to the advisor, Iraqi Special Forces do not have enough resources to hunt down the militants in remote mountainous areas.

"Terrorists keep locals in fear. Hundreds of villages in this area have become deserted. Terrorists use them as prisons, military bases and command units," he concluded.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi declared victory over Islamic State in December 2017.
