Colombia's president-elect Ivan Duque spoke of challenges that he and his country are facing during an exclusive interview with RT in Madrid on Tuesday.

"I think it is a sad situation now. The peace is strong, when there is no violence, the peace is strong, when citizens do not feel intimidated and oppressed because of crimes," said Duque while answering the reporter's question on the current situation in Colombia. He went on to say: "There is no real peace."

Speaking about the peace deal with FARC [formerly the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, now the Common Alternative Revolutionary Force], Duque noted that he is not planning to cancel or reconsider the agreements, but to correct the norms: "The one thing is an agreement that has already been signed between the government and FARC, and another thing is the norms that facilitate the implementation of these agreements. These are just the modifications I proposed to correct what was wrong with these agreements."

He also put on record his opposition to military intervention in Venezuela, saying that multilateral, diplomatic pressure must be exerted instead.

On June 17, 2018, Duque secured victory in Colombian presidential elections with 54 percent while his main opponent, the former mayor of Bogota Gustavo Petro, who was running for the Progressive Movement, received 41.8 percent.

The inauguration will take place on August 7, 2018.
