Thailand: Former navy seal dies during cave rescue operation

Thailand, Mae Sai
July 6, 2018 at 09:43 GMT -00:00 · Published

The rescue mission to retrieve 12 members of a youth football team and their coach from a cave in northern Thailand's Chiang Rai has claimed its first victim, after a former Navy Seal diver died on a return trip from the boys' location. Chiang Rai Deputy Governor Passakorn Boonyaluck announced the rescuer's death from Mae Sai on Friday.

Boonyaluck briefed the press saying "we have to ensure that the morale of the rescue team remains as high as usual."

Saman Kunan died from a lack of oxygen as he was returning from placing air tanks to help maintain oxygen levels in the area of the cave where the boys and their coach remain trapped.

Navy Seal Commander, Rear Admiral Arpakorn Yookongkaew, who also attended the presser, detailed the specifics of the operation saying "we must carry on but we won't carry on this mission recklessly without a plan."

While it was initially assumed that the children could remain in the Tham Luang Nang Non cave for a longer period of time, rescue operations are being intensified in order to save their lives before oxygen runs out.

The team of 12 boys and their 25-year-old coach entered the cave as part of an excursion but became trapped after a sudden, continuous downpour of rain flooded the complex.

They were found alive after a 10-day operation carried out by Thai forces and international rescue teams.
