USA: Russia doing 'fantastic job' with World Cup - Trump

United States, Washington DC

Journalist: "Who are you rooting for?"

Donald Trump, US President: But — well, I’m rooting for everybody to do well. But I think the venue has been fantastic. They really have shown something very special. I fought very hard to get it to the United States, Mexico, and Canada, as you probably have heard. And we were honored to be chosen. And this is a great gentleman and a great soccer fan too. But we were very honored to be chosen for the World Cup. So we look forward to that."

Journalist: "Mr. President, will you meet with President Putin, sir? And where?"

Donald Trump, US President: "Most likely. John Bolton is over there now. He’s over in Russia right now. I just saw, watching media, that he’s met with President Putin. I haven’t gotten the full report yet. But it would look like we will probably be meeting sometime in the not-too-distant future.

And I’ve said it from day one: Getting along with Russia and with China and with everybody is a very good thing. It’s good for the world, it’s good for us, it’s good for everybody. So we’ll probably be meeting sometime around my trip to Europe."

Journalist: "Do you know where?"

Donald Trump, US President: "No, it hasn’t been determined yet. Probably, I will know within an hour."

Rebelo de Sousa, President of Portugal: "I’m very much impressed. He’s the best player in the world, Cristiano Ronaldo. So in a sense — well, I think, [the World Cup] has been a success. I do agree with you — the championship Yeah."

Donald Trump, US President: "Yeah, great. No. No. I think — I think (inaudible) —"

Rebelo de Sousa, President of Portugal: "No doubt about it for the world — for the world."

Donald Trump, US President: "So will Cristiano ever run for President against you? (Laughter.) He wouldn’t win. You know he won’t."

Rebelo de Sousa, President of Portugal: "President, you know — you know something — I must tell you, Portugal is not just United States."

Donald Trump, US President: "That’s right. That’s right."

US President Donald Trump lauded Russia for its organisation of the FIFA World Cup 2018 during a joint photo opportunity with Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sous at the White House in Washington DC on Wednesday.

"They have really done a fantastic job with the World Cup. It’s exciting even if you’re a non-soccer fan", Trump said.

The Portuguese president expressed his pride of his national football team and star player Cristiano Ronaldo, to which Trump asked if the footballer would ever challenge him for president.

De Sousa joked back that he thought it unlikely: "President, you know — you know something — I must tell you, Portugal is not just United States."

Putin added that he would likely be meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin during his trip to Europe.
