Russia: Croatian team flying high after win over Iceland
Croatian player Milan Badelj and Head Coach Zlatko Dalic commented on Croatia's 2-1 victory against Iceland in Rostov-on-Don on Tuesday.
Badelj, who scored the opener, spoke about their future opponents, Denmark: "We are going to start thinking about that tomorrow. They deserve to be in the round of 16, they've played a tough game against France, which is strong and they gave them a hard time. But we believe in our own strengths, in our good form and I believe we will be at our best in the next match as well."
Dalic looked back over his team's past performances in the group: "We won nine points, 7-1 is the goal difference and the top spot in our group. That's fantastic and this is how we look at it. I think that today we again have put a good performance."
Where Croatia had already qualified to the final 16, Iceland needed both a win against Croatia and for Nigeria to lose against the Argentinian team in order to advance. Croatia took the lead in the 53rd minute with Milan Badelj scoring a goal, but Iceland equalised soon after thanks to a penalty kick by Gylfi Sigurdsson. Croatia then sealed the deal in the 90th minute with a goal from Ivan Perisic.
Croatia will face Denmark on July 1 in Nizhny Novgorod.
