Russia: Uruguay will 'kill or die' in WC - Uruguay manager after win over Egypt

Uruguay manager Oscar Tabarez commended the attitude of his team after they defeated Egypt 1-0 earlier in the day. He spoke at a press conference in Yekaterinburg on Friday.

Tabarez said, "To win matches in this group means we will be able to progress. We either die or we kill, and the experience today will help us grow, but we can't make too much of it."

Uruguay defeated Egypt 1-0 after a 90th minute winner from defender Jose Gimenez.

Despite the Uruguayans carving out a number of chances against a resolute Egyptian backline, star strikers Edison Cavani and Luis Suarez, who looked markedly off the pace, were denied by the post and goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shenawy.

With the talismanic Mohamed Salah benched following a shoulder injury sustained in the Champions League final, Egypt rarely looked a threat going forward and their occasional forays into their opponents half were snuffed out by Galatasaray ‘keeper Fernando Muslera and captain Diego Godin.

A breakthrough finally came in the 90th minute when Gimenez rose above the Egyptian defence to head in a freekick from the right flank, giving the Uruguayans a deserved victory.

Uruguay now sit second in Group A behind Russia before they face Saudi Arabia.
