Russia: Rampant Ronaldo hits hat-trick against Spain in 3-3 thriller
Portugal came back against Spain in a thrilling draw for their Group B opener 3-3 at the Fisht Stadium in Sochi on Friday.
Portugal took an early lead after Cristiano Ronaldo won and converted a penalty within three minutes following a foul by his Real Madrid teammate Nacho.
Spain fought back through striker Diego Costa but Ronaldo, once again, gave Portugal the lead after a David de Gea calamity in the net.
Ten minutes later, Costa snuck in from close range for his second before Nacho redeemed himself with a stunning strike that went in off the post around the 60 minute mark.
The script, however, was written by Cristiano whose 25-yard free kick curled over the wall and into the top right with five minutes on the clock, leaving the hapless de Gea with no chance.
Questions will be asked of the Spanish Football Federation following their sacking of manager Julen Lopetegui on the eve of the tournament with his successor Fernando Hierro unable to lead his side to a win over their arch-rivals.
Earlier in the day, Iran defeated Morocco 1-0, meaning they top the group although Spain and Portugal will still be favourites to progress.
