Russia: 'Worst thing that could've happened' – Morocco coach on team's defeat in first WC match in 20 years
Morocco national team manager Herve Renard held a post-match press conference in St. Petersburg on Friday, following the team's 1:0 defeat to Iran earlier in the day.
Renard said that "it's the worst thing that could've happened in extra-time. Congratulations to Iran and congratulations to Carlos Queiroz, the coach of Iran. Now we're going to focus on the second match immediately."
Moroccan midfielder Amine Harit who also participated in the conference expressed regret about the game's results, saying that "we were not efficient, and I am the first in line, and I think we should have done better. Of course, I am disappointed not to win the first match. We know we have two very difficult matches coming up, and it's up to us to have decent results when facing Portugal and Spain. Now we're going forget the defeat of today."
Substitute Aziz Bouhaddouz thumped a header past his own keeper while defending a free kick in the fifth minute of extra-time, handing victory to Iran who had offered little going forward.
It was Morocco's first appearance at the tournament after 20 years. The North African team in Group B will face Portugal on Wednesday.
