Spain: 'Some' Aquarius migrants to be admitted to migrant detention centres, says Deputy PM Calvo

Spanish Deputy Prime Minister Carmen Calvo said on Thursday that some of the migrants aboard the Aquarius who will arrive in the port of Valencia on Sunday will go to migrant detention centres, during a press conference in Valencia.

"Some of them will go to centres for foreigners and others will go directly to centres of humanitarian and social aid, depending of the conditions, as you can imagine," said Calvo during the joint presser with Valencia President Ximo Puig.

She said that the migrants will arrive in Valencia in "a staggered manner" and that each individual will be treated individually to see if they could stay in Spain. "We will have to follow that indicated protocol with personal interviews to each of them, to see if they fulfil the conditions to request asylum in our country", she clarified.

Calvo also said that some minors and women who might have been victims of human trafficking, "will receive particular attention".

According to the Deputy Prime Minister, "we have taken a decision that obliges Europe to respond in relation to human rights and the circumstances of these migrants."

Spain's migrant detention centres are known as CIEs (Centres for Foreigners). There are eight in total across Spain, each with the capacity to hold as many as 2,500 people.

The Aquarius rescued 629 people in two different operations with help from the Italian coastguard. They were due to dock in Sicily, but Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini responded by closing Italian ports and said Malta should take the boat. Spain has since offered 'safe harbour' to the migrant rescue ship.
