Switzerland: FIFA President comments on football's uniting power ahead of World Cup

Switzerland, Zurich
June 13, 2018 at 23:12 GMT -00:00 · Published

FIFA President Gianni Infantino stressed the potential of football to iron out differences between people and nations and assured a high-level security at the 2018 World Cup, during an interview aired on RT on Wednesday, with the legendary Manchester United and Danish goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel.

“I think there are enough, sadly, people around the world who try to divide or argue or dispute or whatever, we have to try to unite. Football has this magic and this power of bringing people together,” the FIFA president noted.

Infantino touched on recent frictions between the World Cup host and other countries, saying “I think football has this power to change the perception of people about the country. I am sure that this World Cup in Russia at this particular time will have quite a significant impact.”

Commenting on security issues and the preventive measures against potential riots at the upcoming tournament, Infantino said that football violence and riots are something that can occur everywhere, at any match. “Unfortunately, idiots are living everywhere and violence around football is happening all over the world as well, in Europe or South America or Africa,” he said.

The World Cup will be held in 11 Russian cities from June 14 to July 15. In total 32 teams will take part in the FIFA World Cup 2018.
