Argentina: Thousands protest government negotiations with IMF

Argentina, Buenos Aires
May 25, 2018 at 23:02 GMT -00:00 · Published

Thousands of Argentines took to the streets in Buenos Aires on Friday in protest over the government's attempt to seek financial assistance from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Footage shows the crowds as they chant slogans and wave flags.

Hugo Yasky, an Argentinian Union Leader, explained his reasons for protesting the IMF negotiations.

"The IMF move signifies the returns of hunger. The return of adjusting. The return of politicians benefitting from financial speculation. The return of a country of broken schools, of hungry children, the return of 2001, when everything blew up and nothing was left behind," Yasky said.

President Mauricio Macri's decision to request $30 billion (€25 billion) from the IMF to shore up the tumbling national currency has come under harsh criticism.

The measures, designed to boost market confidence, have sparked fears of a repeat of the devastating financial crisis in 2001, which Argentineans call the 'corralito.’
