Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that Moscow has "no reason" to trust the MH17 investigation by the Bellingcat group since Russian experts have not been given access to the investigation, when speaking at a panel discussion at the Saint-Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), Friday.

French President Emmanuel Macron, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Christine Lagarde, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Chinese Vice-President Wang Qishan also participated in the panel discussion, alongside Putin.

Commenting on Washington's recent withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal, Macron said that US President Donald Trump "gave up on the nuclear accord because it was signed by his predecessor. I mean it was bad by default in his understanding."

During the panel discussion Macron stressed that Europe remains committed to its security alliance with the US, following which Putin offered Europe help with what appeared to be a sarcastic undertone, saying, "Europe is dependent on the US in terms of security. But you shouldn't worry about it. We will help. We will ensure security. In any case, we are going to do everything in our power to prevent any new threats."

The leaders also discussed the US relocation of its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, with Macron saying that it was a "wrong decision."

Held annually since 1997, and under the auspices of the Russian president since 2005, SPIEF is a leading business event for the global economic sector. The forum brings together the heads of international organisations, well-known public figures, leading academics, experts and the media.
