Italy: Di Maio, Salvini announce PM candidate proposal, vow to prioritise national interests

Five Star Movement (M5S) leader Luigi Di Maio and League leader Matteo Salvini jointly announced the proposal of a prime minister candidate after consultations with Italian President Sergio Mattarella in Rome on Monday.

In case Mattarella approves the proposed prime minister, Di Maio said the government would be "political, focusing on political issues." The M5S leader said “let us kick off first before criticising us.” “This is a great opportunity for Italy,” Di Maio added.

Both Di Maio and Salvini agreed that the Italian national interest would have to be put front and centre.

Stating that international authorities had “nothing to be worried about,” Salvini said the government’s main objective would be to increase jobs, increase security and reduce bureaucracy. “Everything that we have suggested has solid roots and looks ahead, not backwards,” the League leader said, concluding his statement.

Di Maio reportedly confirmed outside the Quirinal that the nominated prime minister was public administration law professor Giuseppe Conte.

According to media reports Di Maio may become either minister for labour or for economic development, while Salvini may nab the position of interior minister.

The duo's agreement, which was revealed on Friday, calls for a strict deportation policy, transparency over the financing of religious institutions and for Islamic prayers to be conducted in Italian; as well as billions of euro in tax cuts and reversing a pension reform that raised the retirement age.

The agreement also demands an end to EU sanctions against Russia.
