Germany: Berlin, Paris pledge to stand by Iran deal if US withdraw

The Foreign Ministers of Germany and France pledged to stand by the Iran nuclear deal in the case of a United States withdrawal during a joint press conference in Berlin on Monday.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said that Germany, France and the United Kingdom were dedicated to maintaining the deal, which they see as bringing 'more security' to the world. Maas warned against a risk of escalation were the deal invalidated.

"We are not of the opinion that there is any justifiable reason to pull out of the deal and we advocate that to our American friends," Maas said.

"We are determined to save this deal because this accord safeguards against nuclear proliferation and is the right way to stop Iran getting a nuclear weapon," French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said.

Le Drian also called on continuing dialogue with Russia, after saying Moscow was 'not an easy partner.'

"We want to continue the dialogue because nothing would be worse than an uncontrolled escalation," the French foreign minister said.

On January 12, Trump set a 120-day deadline for US lawmakers and European allies, including the UK, France and Germany, to overhaul the JCPOA or he would withdraw from the deal.

May 12 is the deadline by which Trump either has to issue new waivers to suspend US sanctions against Iran or exit the nuclear deal.
