South Korean President meeting with senior presidential secretaries, Seoul

SOT, Moon Jae-in, South Korean President (Korean): "[The summit] was a historic starting point. All countries in the world welcomed the result of the summit. I appreciate everybody who devoted sincerity and efforts to this summit. This ‘Panmunjom Declaration’ is a peace agreement declared to the whole world. [We will] make sure to engage in communication at all times with joint efforts by the South and North, and via a communication channel. The North agreed for complete denuclearisation and non-nuclear Korean Peninsula as a mutual goal. This is just a first step. We have only just begun. I wish the committee to prepare after-summit measures without failure. Please proceed with speed, taking practical conditions into consideration. Please make all necessary efforts, also please prepare Three-party talks between South, North Korea and the United States. Lastly, the procedure of agreeing, ratification and declaration of the South and North's agreement should be brought in with speed and it is not right to make it a politically conflicting material again.”

South Korean President Moon Jae-in hailed his meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un during a meeting with senior presidential secretaries in Seoul on Monday.

Moon called for a rapid ratification of the Panmunjom Declaration in the parliament, saying "through this Panmunjom Declaration, we should make this moment an irreversible historical moment for the Korean peninsula's peace and prosperity. But, we have only put forward our first step. It is only a beginning. With a new attitude and will, we should do our best to prepare to take follow-up measures."

The joint declaration was announced on Friday after the historic meeting between Moon and North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jung-un in the border village of Panmunjom at Demilitarised Zone.

The two leaders agreed on a "complete denuclearisation" of the Korean peninsula and the change of the current armistice agreement into a peace treaty by the end of this year.
