USA: Thousands flood streets demanding recognition, reparations for Armenian genocide

United States, Los Angeles
April 25, 2018 at 14:23 GMT -00:00 · Published

People flooded the streets of Los Angeles on Tuesday on the 103th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, to demand recognition of the killings and financial reparations from the Turkish government.

American Armenians and other protesters marched through the streets commemorating the 1,500,000 victims of the Armenian massacre in 1915.

"We are here demanding justice, reparations and recognition for the 1,500,000 Armenians that were lost during this genocide. And we will continue to demand justice until we receive it," stated one of the protesters.

Commemorations have taken place on April 24 since the 1920s, marking the date in 1915 when hundreds of Armenian intellectuals were arrested in the Ottoman capital of Constantinople, before being executed.

In the years that followed, ethnic Armenians were displaced, deported or placed in concentration camps by Ottoman authorities. Between 600,000 and 1.8 million people are believed to have died during the period. The Turkish government has not recognised the massacre as genocide.
