Toronto police officials confirmed the charges placed against the suspected perpetrator of Monday's van attack Alek Minassian, and updated the public on the investigation during a press conference given in Toronto on Tuesday.

Homicide Detective Sergeant Graham Gibson stated that "He [Alek Minassian] has been charged with ten counts of first degree murder, 13 counts of attempted murder, and we're anticipating a 14th count of attempted murder which will be laid shortly." Gibson also confirmed that Minassian appeared in court earlier on Tuesday morning.

When asked to comment on the video which surfaced, allegedly showing Minassian being apprehend by Police, Toronto Chief of Police Mark Saunders stated that de-escalation has been an important part of police training in Toronto, but "having said that, that particular situation yesterday, the way in which it went down was nothing short of remarkable."

On Monday, a white rental van mowed down pedestrians for reportedly three kilometres (two miles), killing ten and injuring 15. The attack took place near the intersection of Yonge Street and Finch Avenue in Toronto's North York district.

Police have released the name of the suspect as Alek Minassian, 25.

The vehicle initially fled the scene, but the driver was later apprehended in a reported standoff with the police. The driver allegedly emerged from the vehicle holding something which resembled a hand gun but later yielded without any shots being fired.
