Switzerland: Armenian Genocide Monument unveiled in Geneva

The Armenian Genocide Monument was unveiled in Geneva's Trembley Park on Friday.

The monument, commemorating the victims of the Armenian genocide, dubbed 'Street Lamps of Memory', was created by French-Armenian artist Melik Ohanian.

The monument was approved by the Geneva City Council in 2008. However, the construction was reportedly delayed due to the diplomatic pressure from Turkey.

It was reportedly planned to erect the monument in a park near the UN Geneva Headquarters; however, the site was changed amid tensions with Ankara.

Mayor of Geneva Remy Pagani said that "Geneva, the city of peace, human rights, dialogue and tolerance, welcomes this artwork in its public area. It's a unifying artwork because it's got a universal scope by offering a large reflection of the act of remembering of the martyred people and collective violence."

One local resident said "everybody has to recognise this genocide because it happened, we know that for sure. It's a pity, especially that Turkey doesn't want to recognise these mistakes."
