Russia: Rosneft CEO confirms Ulyukaev demanded 'bribe'

Russian Federation, Moscow

Rosneft CEO Igor Sechin said that he had testified as a witness that former Russian Minister of Economics Alexei Ulyukaev had demanded "a bribe," in Moscow on Thursday.

Sechin said, "In general, I can say that I have confirmed my position during the court session that Ulyukaev demanded an illegal reward, he indicated the amount, he himself came for it and left."

He went on to say that he was "a key witness" before adding that "it was a matter of honour for me" to appear in court. He added, "My job was to come to the court as a [Russian] citizen and give my testimony to avoid in the future such negative phenomena as what Ulyukaev had demanded, a bribe."

Earlier on Thursday, a Moscow court rejected an appeal made by the former Russian Minister of Economics Alexei Ulyukaev, leaving his eight years prison sentence unchanged.

The court removed one condition of Ulyukaev's sentence regarding the deprivation of a right to hold positions in the government bodies, departments of local authorities, state municipal institutions and public corporations.

The Zamoskvoretsky court sentenced Ulyukaev to eight years in jail and a fine of 130 million rubles [US $2,100] in December last year for accepting a 2 million dollar bribe from Rosneft CEO Igor Sechin in exchange for approving the takeover of the Russian state-owned regional oil company Bashneft by Rosneft.
