Belgium: Experts were asked to identify agent, not source - EC spokesperson on Skripal

SOT, Alexander Winterstein, European Commission Deputy Chief Spokesperson: "Well, on the report, let me just say that our understanding is that the role of the expert there was to identify the type of agent that was used, not the source of the agent and that's also what the experts have done, they did identify the nerve agent as Novichok. So that is what they have done. And for the rest, I would refer you to the March European Council, where I think the European leaders have taken a clear position."

SOT, Journalist: "Just a brief follow up. Can you tell us is there any assessment how much longer Mr. Idarow will be back in Brussels for consultations. Is there any new development on that?"

SOT, Alexander Winterstein, European Commission Deputy Chief Spokesperson: "No, the Ambassador, as far as I'm aware, the Ambasssador's continuing his institutional consultations."

European Commission Deputy Chief Spokesperson Alexander Winterstein commented on the recent announcement from a British lab that the poison used against ex-Russian double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia could not be traced back to Russia, during a European Commission meeting in Brussels, Wednesday.

"Well, on the report, let me just say that our understanding is that the role of the expert there was to identify the type of agent that was used, not the source of the agent and that's also what the experts have done," stated Winterstein.

"For the rest, I would refer you to the March European Council, where I think the European leaders have taken a clear position," added the EC spokesperson.

The comments followed revelations yesterday that Britain's chemical research facility at Porton Down was unable to identify the exact source of the nerve agent.

Former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia were poisoned in the beginning of March in Salisbury. The UK has blamed Moscow for the incident, while Russia has denied any involvement in the affair.
