Turkey: Akkuyu nuclear plant is a 'symbol' of Russian-Turkish deepening ties - Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan attended a ceremony in Ankara on Tuesday to launch the first unit of Turkey's first nuclear power plant in Akkuyu, in the country’s southern province of Mersin.

During the ceremony, Putin stated that the construction of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant is a "symbol of the dynamic development" of Russia-Turkey bilateral ties.

According to Putin, the plant will provide the Turkish people with the "affordable and clean energy," which he said will cover around 10 percent of Turkey's electricity needs.

In turn, Erdogan said that the construction of the nuclear plant has been a "dream of our country for more than half a century," noting Russia's "exemplary" collaboration on the project.

The Akkuyu nuclear power plant will be built by Russian State Nuclear Energy Agency Rosatom. The plant, with a total investment cost of $20 billion (€16.273 billion), will have a total capacity of 4,800 megawatts in four units. Two units with a capacity of 2,400 megawatts are planned for the first phase of the construction.

The plant will reportedly have a working life of 8,000 hours a year and will produce some 35 billion kilowatt of electricity at full capacity.

Putin is on a two-day visit to Turkey, where he is due to attend the seventh meeting of the Turkey-Russia High-Level Cooperation Council in Ankara on April 3. On April 4, Putin will attend a summit on Syria, alongside Erdogan and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.

In 2010, Moscow and Ankara signed an intergovernmental agreement to create the Akkuyu plant near the port of Mersin. Russia is financing the project with a build-own-operate model. The construction is scheduled for completion in 2023. Power from the plant is expected to be sold mostly inside the country.
