Clashes erupted in Paris on Thursday during the first demonstrations held against proposed public sector reforms by French President Emmanuel Macron.

Riot police clashed with hooded youths as striking school pupils joined the march through Paris in the Bastille area of the city.

Police used water cannons to disperse protesters who managed to damage several shops in the area.

Transport throughout the country was massively affected with traffic jams around major cities, delays on train lines and the cancellation of flights.

The strike is the first of a massive protest planned by unions to protest Macron’s reform.
