Newly elected German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas welcomed his first international counterpart to Berlin on Thursday - Dutch Foreign Minister Stef Blok.

The two foreign ministers – meeting for the first time - spoke about Turkey’s military operation in Afrin and its implication for the fight against ISIS.

Blok is extremely worried about the effects this operation has on fighting ISIS, saying “that's an extra argument for us to be very critical about what Turkey is achieving here” and called on them to abide by the UN security council resolution.

Maas said that they don't support in any way the operation and that in the case of a permanent occupation of Afrin by Turkey, further steps will be taken by Germany, since “That would be really hard to be reconciled with international law."
