The majority of 110 schoolgirls kidnapped by militants thought to be Boko Haram last month, were released from captivity in the north eastern province of Yobe on Wednesday.

The government says 101 schoolgirls were returned to the state capital by the army. Separate reports indicate that five died in captivity and one Christian girl remains hostage. The other three are unaccounted for as of yet.

Nigerian Minister of Defence Mansur Dan Ali praised the president and security forces for their efforts. "I gave two weeks or two months or thereabout and thank God this has come to pass," he said.

The girls were taken from their school on February 19, following a raid by militants on the town of Dapchi.
