Russia: Moscow considers Mirzayanov's 'Novichok' formula publication as 'aiding terrorism' - MoD

Head of the Russian Forces for Radiation, Chemical and Biological Protection, Igor Kirillov, stated that the formula of the substance dubbed 'Novichok' was published by scientist Vil Mirzayanov, who "is working for the US government." He made the statement at a press conference in Moscow on Wednesday.

Kirillov said that Russia "considers the fact of an open publication of Mirzayanov's book with formulas of so-called toxic substances and processes of their synthesis as aiding terrorism. Consequently, all questions about the alleged existence of 'Novichok' and its properties should be addressed to Mr Mirzayanov, who works for the US government and speaks about 'Novichok' as a warfare toxic chemical substance. Russia has nothing to do with this."

He went on to say that "having a formula from this book and having received an education from a chemical university, it is enough to have the necessary equipment and chemical substances to produce a warfare toxic substance without difficulty."

On Tuesday, 23 Russian diplomats who were expelled from the UK over the Skripal poisoning case left the country.

Last week, UK Prime Minister Theresa May ordered the expulsion of Russian diplomats, claiming that it was "highly likely" that Russian government was involved in Skripal's poisoning, adding that Moscow was either "responsible" for the "attempted murder" of Skripal and his daughter Yulia or was negligent in its handling of "weapons-grade nerve agents."

The Russian government has denied allegations of its involvement. In a tit-for-tat move, Moscow said that it would expel 23 UK diplomats and shut down the British Council in Russia.
