Russia: Muscovites cast ballots as presidential election kicks off

Polling stations across Moscow opened their doors on Sunday as voting in the 2018 Russian presidential elections begins.

The first polls open in Russia's Far East at 20:00 GMT on Saturday, March 17, and the last polls in the Kaliningrad exclave close at 18:00 GMT on Sunday, March 18.

The first round of the 2018 Russian presidential election will be contested by a total of eight candidates on March 18. Should no candidate reach a majority, a second round will take place three weeks later scheduled for April 8.

Almost 111 million voters are registered to cast their votes to one of eight candidates, including the incumbent President.

According to the Chairperson of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Ella Pamfilova, over 1000 international observers will work in Russia to oversee the election process.

Los primeros colegios electorales abrieron en el Lejano Oriente de Rusia a las 20.00 GMT del 17 de marzo y la provincia de Kaliningrado será la última en comenzar la votación.

Vladimir Putin es el principal favorito a la victoria. Si en la primera vuelta ningún candidato logra la mayoría absoluta de los votos, se realizará una segunda ronda el 8 de abril de 2018.

Casi 111 millones de votantes están convocados a las urnas para elegir a al presidente que gobernará el país los próximos seis años. En total 8 candidatos participan en los comicios. Según la presidenta de la Comisión Electoral Central (CEC), Ella Pamfilova, más de 1000 observadores internacionales supervisan el proceso electoral.
