Brazil: 'Who killed Marielle?' - Rio and Sao Paulo march for murdered councilwoman

Thousands marched in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo on Thursday to protest against the murder of prominent councilwoman and human rights activist Marielle Franco.

38-year old Franco, an activist for the rights of marginalised communities and a critic of police brutality, was shot dead in her car along with her driver by two men in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday evening. She was driving back from a black women's empowerment event.

Protesters in Rio de Janeiro gathered in front of the Legislative Assembly, holding signs remembering Franco and chanting against Brazilian President Michel Temer. Protesters in Sao Paulo marched down the Avenida Paulista holding a banner reading “Who killed Marielle?”.

A member of the Socialism and Liberty Party (PSOL), Franco was known for her social work in Rio’s slums or ‘favelas’, and had won the fifth-highest vote count among the city’s council members when she was elected in 2016.

Rio de Janeiro state public defenders said Franco’s death resembled an execution and may be connected to her advocacy work.

Rio’s chief of public security, Richard Fernandez Nunes, promised a full investigation into the death.

Human rights group Amnesty International has condemned the killing and called on the Brazilian authorities to ensure a "prompt, thorough and impartial" investigation.

On February 16, Brazilian President Michel Temer signed a command putting the military in charge of security in Rio de Janeiro.
