USA: White House describes UK spy poisoning as 'outrageous'

United States, Washington DC
March 12, 2018 at 20:48 GMT -00:00 · Published

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders described that the poisoning of former Russian spy Sergei Skripal in the English city of Salisbury is 'an outrage' during a press briefing in Washington DC on Monday.

"The use of a highly lethal nerve agent against UK citizens on UK soil is an outrage," Sanders said. "The attack was reckless, indiscriminate and irresponsible."

She, however, refused to be drawn on comments as to whether the Russian state was to blame for the 'attempted murder.'

Earlier in the day, British Prime Minister Theresa May singled out Russia as the likely perpetrator of the attack.

Skripal and his daughter were found unconscious after a nerve agent attack a week ago in the English city of Salisbury. They remain in a critical but stable condition in Salisbury district hospital.

The 66-year-old former Russian military intelligence officer was convicted in Russia of supplying MI6 with Russian state secrets. Part way through his jail term, in 2010, he was involved in a spy swap and given refuge in the UK.
