Israel: Church of Holy Sepulchre reopens after three-day tax protest

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem reopened on Wednesday after being shut down for three days of protests against the government’s decision to tax properties owned by Christian churches.

“The church was opened three days after it was closed due to Israel's decision to impose taxes on churches and church property. The officials rejected that and closed the church on Sunday at 12 pm. After that, Israel went back on the decision and then it was opened”, explained Head of the special Church of the Holy Sepulchre Azarya Aladaslini.

“After the opening of the church, we have felt great joy, for us and for all the residents here, we are proud that the Church has returned and opened its doors. This is our second home”, said resident Issa Assisian.

On Tuesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the suspension of the decision by the West Jerusalem municipality to impose property taxes on church institutions, following protests and international pressure.
