South Korea: IOC declares Czech skier Ledecka ‘Queen of the Games’ after shock victory

“This is an incredible story, a most amazing story. I think she might already be queen of the games”, said International Olympic Committee (IOC) spokesperson Mark Adams when asked about Ester Ledecka’s unlikely victory in the women’s Alpine Skiing Super-G race.

“These are the kind of stories that we need in the games," concurred the IOC’s Olympic Games Executive Director Christophe Dubi.

The 22-years-old snowboarder from the Czech Republic achieved one of the biggest surprises in the history of the Winter Olympic Games on Saturday when she won the women’s Super-G event.

The outsider was ranked 43rd in the world and had never finished higher than seventh in the World Cup. What is truly remarkable, however, is that Ledecka’s preferred sport is snowboarding.

She will make history once again on Thursday, when she competes in the snowboard parallel giant slalom, becoming the first athlete to compete in both snowboard and skiing at the Olympics.
