Germany: Kurds occupy SPD HQ in Hamburg before eviction by police

Pro-Kurdish activists stormed the German Social Democratic Party (SPD) headquarters in Hamburg, late on Monday afternoon, to protest German arms exports to Turkey.

They chanted slogans against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel of the SPD. Hidden behind masks, they declared from the building's balcony that both politicians had blood on their hands.

A total of 11 protesters stormed the SPD headquarters, according to reports, with four of them making it on to the balcony. There they unveiled several banners, while the others blocked the entrance to the headquarters.

The protest was also supported by about 20 other activists, who watched the action while cheering in front of the building.

The Kurdish protesters, who were reportedly supported by left-wing activists, called for an end to arms exports to Turkey, a withdrawal of weapons permits and a lifting of the ban on the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). They blame the SPD for its role as a coalition partner in the German government that signed off on arms exports to Turkey.

The police mobilised forces to evict the protesters. Shortly after dark, the officers cleared the building. A total of six people, some of whom resisted, were detained, according to reports.

Since Turkey launched the 'Olive Branch' military operation in Kurdish Syria, there have been numerous protests by the Kurdish communities around Europe.
