South Korea: First female Olympic Jamaican bobsleigh team discuss breaking down barriers

The first female Jamaican bobsleigh team to participate in the Winter Olympics talked about breaking down barriers and the stigmas they faced during a press conference in PyeongChang on Saturday.

Sled pilot and team leader Jazmine Fenlator-Victorian was accompanied by brakewomen Carrie Russell and Audra Segree, as well as President of Jamaica Bobsleigh Federation Leo Campbell.

"We look forward to build on a legacy that they started and create our own," Fenlator-Victorian said, referring to the Jamaican men’s bobsleigh team which first participated at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary.

"To be the first female bobsleigh team to represent my country and to be a part of that movement, overall to be a female who can make that move, it's a powerful thing" Russell said, highlighting the importance of breaking "that barrier and to make that move within the Caribbean."

Talking about diversity in the Olympics, Fenlator-Victoria underlined the importance that "little girls and little boys see someone that looks like them, talks like them, has the same culture as them, has crazy curly hair and wears it natural, has brown skin, included in different things in this world. When you grow up and you don't see that, you feel like you can't do it, and that is not right."
