South Korea: Military to cover for norovirus-depleted security in Pyeongchang

Nine hundred South Korean military personnel have been deployed at the Winter Olympics in order to cover for the security force that was hit with an outbreak of the norovirus, stated President of the Pyeongchang 2018 Organising Committee Lee Hee-beom in Pyeongchang on Wednesday.

Lee Hee-beom gave an update on the outbreak of the Norovirus during the second day of meetings as part of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) 132nd session at the Kensington Flora hotel in Pyeongchang. The virus hit Pyeongchang just days before the 2018 Games are due to begin.

The Korean official explained that dozens of security contractors had been infected with the virus, and hundreds had since been checked for symptoms of the contagious virus, adding that the Organising Committee was doing 'its utmost to prevent spreading of the virus.'

Addressing the issue of sexual harassment, Lee Hee-boem official said that any potential sexual harassment would be 'treated as a top priority matter.'

IOC President Thomas Bach opened the session by joking that discussions on the 'sport and Games' could now finally begin, nodding back to the first day of the session, which was almost solely focused on the discussion of anti-doping and the fate of Russian athletes.

Looking forward, Chair of the Coordination Commission Gunilla Lindberg thanked the South Korean authorities for the cold weather, adding that such conditions were promising for the upcoming ski competitions.
