Maldives: Ex-president arrested as opposition protesters hit Male's streets

Former Maldivian President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom was arrested at his residence in Male early on Tuesday morning, hours after the government declared a 15-day state of emergency. Two Supreme Court judges were simultaneously arrested, after security forces raided the Supreme Court compound where they were hiding.Opposition protesters took to the streets following news of the arrests to declare their support for another former president, exiled Mohammed Nasheed, who was given asylum in the UK after resigning from presidency. Nasheed later claimed he was forced to resign at gunpoint.Gayoom, who served as president between 1978 and 2008, faces charges of bribery and attempting to overthrow the government. On Monday, the incumbent Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen declared a state of emergency on the grounds of investigating a “coup”, handing the government power to make arrests and to search and seize properties, as well as to restrict freedom of assembly. Yameen ordered the arrests of Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed and Judge Ali Hamid, along with the former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who is also his half-brother. Following the arrests, the Supreme Court has reversed its decision to release nine convicted politicians.
