Switzerland: 'Great victory' - Lawyer for 39 Russian athletes lauds CAS ruling

Switzerland, Geneva
February 1, 2018 at 19:52 GMT -00:00 · Published

Philipp Bartsch , Shellenberg Wittmer Ltd’s lawyer representing 39 Russian athletes before CAS, said that today’s decision made by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) proves that the IOC had “wrongly sanctioned” the innocent Russian sportsmen “for something they have not done,” speaking in Geneva, on Tuesday.

The CAS cleared 28 out of 39 athletes of any anti-doping violations while reducing the lifetime ban of others 11 to one-time ineligibility for the upcoming Winter Olympic Games.

Meanwhile, the International Olympic Committee has already stated that its decision on barring these 28 athletes from participating in PyeongChang-hosted Olympics remains in effect.

Bartsch was confident that today’s verdict from CAS would not be overturned on appeal, given that the IOC had, in his opinion, ‘very limited’ grounds for appeal.

As for their participation in next month’s Pyeongchang hosted games, the sports lawyer vowed to fight on. “Those 28 athletes were successful and there is no reason why they should not be allowed to participate in the Olympic games”.

The former head of Russia’s anti-doping agency, Rodchenkov, was the whistle blower who started the investigation into allegations of state-sponsored doping.
