Russia: Sochi congress could be beginning of Syrian crisis settlement – Syria’s Tomorrow Movement

Russian Federation, Sochi
January 29, 2018 at 18:03 GMT -00:00 · Published

Representative of Syria’s Tomorrow Movement Munzer Akbik spoke at the Syrian National Dialogue Congress in Sochi, Monday.

“I believe that after four years and after nine rounds of negotiations, the Geneva process did not make a single step in the settlement process”, said Akbik. “Congress could be the beginning of the settlement of the Syrian crisis”, he continued. Speaking on the agenda, Akbik said that: “Based on the information that we have and based on the contacts and negotiations that we have with the Russian side we can say that during this Congress we will mainly discuss the issue of the constitution, national reconciliation in Syria, and Syrian national dialogue."

Syria’s Tomorrow Movement is an external Syrian opposition group. Initially they refused to send a delegation to the Sochi Congress, but accepted the invitations for individual representatives.

The Syrian National Dialogue Congress is set to take place between January 29 and 30. Around 1,600 delegates representing the entire spectrum of Syria's political, civil and ethno-confessional forces have been invited to participate in the congress.

More than 1,300 people from Syria are set to attend the congress, including representatives of the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party and the National Progressive Front. Representatives of the internal opposition from Damascus have already arrived to Sochi. Some 300 members of the external opposition will also reportedly participate, including the 'Moscow Platform' and 'Astana Platform'. A special group of the so-called 'reconciled' illegal armed groups are also expected to participate in the congress.
