Afghanistan: Bullet holes, destruction mark deadly attack on Save the Children offices

Afghanistan, Jalalabad
January 25, 2018 at 15:46 GMT -00:00 · Published

Soldiers patrolled the area around the Save the Children offices in Jalalabad on Thursday, a day after a deadly bomb and gun attack on the building.

The offices now stand riddled with bullet holes and scorch-marks in the wake of the attack and subsequent fire-fight with security forces.

A staff member at Save the Children recounted the attack, describing how the car bomb explosion had followed initial gunfire that saw employees rush to a safe room inside the complex. "Right now we are in the hospital and searching for our guards and one or two employees," he added.

A Jalalabad resident who arrived to collect his son’s corpse from the building broke down in tears saying that his son had just got engaged and that "he was our financial supporter."

Officials have confirmed three deaths and at least 25 wounded so far. The self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL) has claimed responsibility for the attack.

This is the second major militant attack in Afghanistan within the last few days. A 12-hour siege resulted in the deaths of at least 22 people at the Inter-Continental Hotel in Kabul over the weekend.
