Germany: Thousands protest Siemens and Bombardier layoffs in Gorlitz
Thousands of Siemens and Bombardier employees protested against the impending plant closures austerity measures announced by the companies in a rally in Gorlitz on Friday.
Two separate groups of workers started marching from the Siemens and Bombardier plants, before they joined forces at Brautwiesenplatz and marched to Obermarkt, where they held their rally.
The demonstration was reportedly attended by about 7000 people, in addition to an estimated 5,000 students, family members and other residents.
This demo was calling for a major rally there under the motto "Preserving Tradition, Securing Jobs, Shaping the Future."
Siemens announced that it will close completely the Gorlitz plant by 2023 despite a healthy number orders. As for Bombardier, the plant runs a risk of maintaining a limited core workforce of around 700 employees, which, according to the protesters, will not be viable to keep a full-line manufacturer running.
