Tunisia: Scuffles in Tunis as protesters give govt. the yellow card

Tunisia, Tunis
January 12, 2018 at 19:13 GMT -00:00 · Published

Dozens of protesters clashed with police in Tunis on Friday, as protesters continued demonstrating against the government's approved increases in the budget bill for 2018.The protesters convened in front of Tunis' Municipal Theatre, among them activists of the 'Fech Nestanaw' ('What are we waiting for?' in Arabic) campaign, that had initiated protests against the 2018 Finance Act. Protesters waved yellow cards against the government, chanted anti-government slogans and clashed with riot police as they marched towards administrative offices in the Tunisian capital. Protests against deteriorating economic conditions kicked off across the country on Monday following the government's announcement of austerity measures and tax increases. Some 800 people have reportedly been arrested since the beginning of protests. The demonstrations come almost seven years after former president Zein El Abidine Ben Ali was toppled in an uprising that sparked the Arab Spring protests. Tunisia is under pressure from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and its partners to cut its deficit and to create jobs, despite the fact that one of Tunisia's most profitable sectors, tourism, has been suffering since 2015, when the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL) carried out numerous military attacks against tourists.
