SOT, Journalist: "The ['Ndrangheta] control in this case arrived all the way in Germany, is the role of EuroJust important in this way, is it an impeccable coordination?"

SOT, Vincenzo Luberto, Prosecutor (Italian): "Yes, definitely. EuroJust does its job in an impeccable and effective way, it makes things go faster, reduces bureaucracy, it allows us to interface with our German colleagues and to execute precautionary measures at the same time."

Italian and German police have detained 169 suspects in a vast anti-mafia operation in the two countries, fighting a crime network that has alleged widespread involvement in politics and business.

Some €50 million ($59 million) worth of property was seized in the joint operation against the 'Ndrangheta mafia crime syndicate, the Italian Carabinieri said in a statement on Tuesday. Among the detained suspects was the President of the province of Crotone, Nicodemo Parrilla.

Speaking at a press conference in Catanzaro, Chief Prosecutor Nicola Gratteri said the operation was the largest of its kind in the last 20 years, and that since then anti-Mafia personnel had become stronger and “much better equipped.”

‘Ndrangheta, based in the southern Italian region of Calabria, has been known to infiltrate businesses across Italy as well as in Germany. Eleven of the suspects were detained in the German states of Baden-Wurttemberg, Bavaria, Hesse and North Rhine-Westphalia on accusations of blackmailing and money laundering, German police said.

Many of the 169 arrest warrants – issued for mafia association, attempted murder, money laundering, extortion and illegal weapons – targeted suspects already imprisoned for other crimes.

The crime ring's "holding company," based in the Calabrian town of Ciro’ Marina was led from his cell by Giuseppe Farao, a 71-year-old boss already sentenced to life imprisonment but still issuing instructions to his family and associates.
