Iran: Khamenei points finger at 'enemies' for anti-gov. protests

Iran's Supreme Leader Sayyid Ali Hosseini Khamenei blamed 'enemies' for the ongoing nationwide anti-government protests, speaking in Tehran on Tuesday.In the Ayatollah's first comments since the beginning of the unrest, Khamenei accused Iran's 'enemies' of being 'poised for an opportunity, a breach to penetrate through.'"All those who are against the Islamic Republic, those with cash, politics, weapons and intelligence apparatus, join hands so they may be able to create troubles for the Islamic Republic," he added. Khamenei did not specify which countries or individuals he was referring to, saying that he would talk to people about the protests 'at a proper time.' At least 21 people have died in anti-government protests that have raged since Thursday, with rallies against rising food prices, unemployment and alleged corruption.President Hassan Rouhani acknowledged the public's anger over the Iran's flagging economy, though he and other officials warned that the government would not hesitate to crack down on those it considers to be lawbreakers.
