Brave locals brace the cold for Vancouver’s Polar Bear Swim

Canada, Vancouver
January 2, 2018 at 04:00 GMT -00:00 · Published

More than a thousand of people gathered on English Bay Beach in Vancouver, Monday, to brave the cold for the annual New Year’s Day Polar Bear Swim.

Men, women, and children of all ages dressed in various costumes gathered on the beach to take a dip in the 7 degrees water.

"This is my 43rd year at the Polar Bear Swim. We started in 1976," said one of the participants.

Vancouver's Polar Bear Swim is one of the largest and oldest polar bear swims in the world.

The tradition goes back to 1920, when only a handful of brave swimmers would plunge into the frigid waters on New Year's Day.
