France: Rennes' citizens respond to mayor's letter pleading for extra refugee help

Residents of Rennes responded to an open letter from French mayor Nathalie Appere, appealing for help from the central government to deal with the refugee crisis, in the city centre on Wednesday.

The letter, which was jointly written by the mayors of Nantes, Lille, Bordeaux, Grenoble, Toulouse, Strasbourg and Rennes, was published in Le Monde newspaper on Tuesday.

In it, local chiefs declared that the “massive rise in the demand for asylum” was causing a “social emergency” in towns and cities across France. They also asked for extra government funding and a coordinated effort to address the migrant crisis.

One resident agreed with Renne's mayor Appere. He said, "our country is based on welcoming people who are in need. Therefore, I support the seven mayors and their letter to [President Emmanuel] Macron, and I also ask our President, as a citizen, to give more help to the town hall for migrants.”

Another felt that the situation of refugees could not take priority over the needs of French citizens. "We are thinking about migrants, but unfortunately there are also lot of French people in similar situations", she said.
