Egypt: Jerusalem status may be determined 'only based on international law' - Sisi

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi warned against "possible consequences" of the "dangerous" decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel for the peace efforts in the Middle East. Sisi made the statement at a press conference held alongside his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Cairo on Monday.

Sisi said, "We have discussed the decision of the United States to move its embassy in Israel [from Tel Aviv] to Jerusalem. We have discussed the possible consequences of this dangerous decision for efforts to establish peace in the Middle East."

He added: "I have also said to President Putin that the legal status of Jerusalem may be determined only based on international law and the United Nations Security Council resolutions. Moreover, we have agreed on working together to prevent any plans that could undermine peace in the region."

Commenting on the settlement of the Syrian conflict, the Egyptian leader noted that "we have agreed on supporting the de-escalation zones initiative and expanding it to create a favourable environment for the upcoming political negotiations."

Putin travelled to Egypt to hold talks on bilateral relations and the security situation in the region. During the trip, the two leaders also finalised a deal to build Egypt's first nuclear plant. The accord was signed by Egyptian Energy Minister Mohamed Shaker and Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom Director General Alexei Likhachev.

The 4,800-megawatt capacity plant will reportedly be built at el-Daba in the Matrouh Governorate. Its construction is expected to be completed within a seven-year period, with the trial operation planned for 2022.
