Switzerland: Russian Olympic ski team 'concerned' about IOC Executive Board meeting

Switzerland, Davos
December 5, 2017 at 13:07 GMT -00:00 · Published

The Russian Olympic ski team is "a little bit concerned" about the meeting held by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board (EB) concerning the participation of Russian athletes in the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Games, after doping allegations in the 2014 Sochi Olympics. The feeling was voiced by Russian Olympic Ski Team Assistant Trainer Igor Sorin, in Davos, on Tuesday.

"Of course the whole team is a little bit concerned," said Sorin. "We tried to focus more on the competition, on the World Cup, but what happened around the team, of course, concerned the team," added the Olympic ski trainer.

At the IOC Executive Board meeting, which was held earlier that day at the organisation’s headquarters in Lausanne, Russia was represented by President of the country's national Olympic Committee Alexander Zhukov, Head of independent anti-doping commission Vitaly Smirnov, and two-time defending world figure skating champion Evgenia Medvedeva.

The verdict is expected to be announced during a press conference by the IOC President Thomas Bach at the Beaulieu Convention Centre in Lausanne at 19:30 local time (18:30 GMT).

Looking into re-tests of samples from the Sochi Games over alleged doping, reported by the former head of Russia's anti-doping agency RUSADA and key whistleblower Grigory Rodchenkov, led to Olympic life bans for 25 Russian athletes so far, while their results have been annulled.
